A dated brick color, double doors, a tiny stoop, and a huge arched window all worked together to make this existing house feel tired and dated. The house needed a facelift. It needed a front that did the house justice and welcomed visitors while still separating the public domain from the private.
The new front porch adds a much needed “waistband” to the house. It brings the entire facade down to a more comfortable human scale while also making the entry more “stately” and welcoming. With the help of the terraced walkway and planting area, the house now reaches out into the front yard. The new gable above the garage adds an edge to the house’s front facade, helping the entire composition be more cohesive.
Besides the aesthetic concerns, the porch also protects the sun beaten front door, protects visitors from the rain and provides a comfortable, yet protected place to sit and relax. A dramatic change to a house now fits in for many years to come.
