The owners of this 1911 South Minneapolis home purchased it in 2014 with the intention of doing many updates. Over the years they have remodeled the basement as well as many small touches throughout the home. However, they had never tackled the major issue which was the very dated, small kitchen and lack of a mudroom. Having four young boys and a new addition of a very energetic chocolate lab made these small spaces almost unmanageable.
The clients came to the table with very strong opinions about color palette and spatial needs but were unsure how those ideas would manifest into a finished project. The connection between the existing and new spaces as well durability of materials and how much yard space the addition would occupy were thoroughly discussed. Their boys are very active, inside, and out, and make great use of all the spaces available to them and we wanted to not hinder that spirit.
The solution was a thoughtfully designed one-story addition that allowed the kitchen to be enlarged, a mudroom to be added on to the north side of the addition, a covered stoop on the rear of the home and a semi-finished basement space below the addition to house a sauna.
The new kitchen’s walnut cabinetry and cool blue handmade tile backsplash evoke timelessness and vibrancy which was an important element to the family. The elegant painted island allows for all the kids to hang out in the kitchen while the walnut knee-space allows for better protection from all those small feet. We extended the homes one and one-half inch white oak floors into the kitchen to maintain visual consistency with the rest of the spaces.
“We were planning to remodel our kitchen and create a mudroom space for several years before it actually happened. I had interviewed and even paid for basic ideas from other architects before deciding to work with Jim and his team at Locale. Jim, Bill and Andy are professionals who are not only creative, but they are able to execute the plans with precision and fluidity. Locale's attention to detail is impressive and their cost structure is straightforward. Locale works with great sub-contractors, who are the best of the best, delivering the results you expect. Jim and his team are always available to answer you calls and quickly address any concerns you have, big or small. The process, from the beginning to end, is straightforward and delivered us a well built and beautiful mudroom/kitchen addition that we absolutely love. I've done a lot of renovation projects and although this one was one of the largest ones, it was the smoothest and gave us the best results. I would recommend Locale to anyone, and I would use Locale again in the future without hesitation! - Janet
