The owner’s of this 1906 home used to live across the street. They have always admired it and purchased it as soon as it hit the market. The house was very well maintained and, unlike many turn of the century homes, much of the existing character was still intact. This meant, however, that the existing kitchen had not been updated and was still a hodge-podge of mismatched cabinets and stand-alone appliances. The existing window was too low for a standard countertop, the room was isolated from the main living spaces, and a small set of stairs took up valuable space. It needed an update that worked for the new family and fit in with the rest of the beautiful home.
The solution was to work with the space we had rather than add on. We eliminated the stair, added a new opening between the kitchen and the living room, changed the one tall window into two wide ones, and added custom cabinets with details and finishes that were appropriate to the home. We added a peninsula to create a small eating area and supported it with a large turned leg stained to match the large columns in the rest of the house.
The new kitchen is open, bright, organized and perfect for the new owners.
