For a family that spends much of their time outdoors with friends and family, their existing house presented itself as somewhat closed off. The existing small front stoop was falling apart and gave little room for gathering. They hoped for a front entry that was both modern and inviting, a casual place where neighbors felt welcome to stop by and hang out.
The solution was a new mudroom addition with a playful form that opens up to the front yard and to a new cedar front porch shaded by an open trellis. The new space feels open, inviting, natural and playful. A stark contrast to the original undersized formal entry.
In the back of the house we transformed a small deck into a spacious screen porch. Made of the same natural cedar, the details of the front and the rear screen porch connect the two spaces together, linking the front and back. Now, when people are hanging out on the front porch and the bugs come out, nobody has to leave, they just relocate to the back porch.
